She obtained her MD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, has a Master’s degree in Pharmacology /Toxicology from the University of Arizona in addition to a BS in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. She has held multiple laboratory research positions in Pharmacology. Her graduate thesis research was in the field of cancer chemotherapeutic toxicities.
Dr. Phelps was drawn to Integrative Medicine while enrolled as a graduate student in the Pharmacology Department at the University of Arizona in the early 80’s. At the U of A, she was exposed to the emerging field of Integrative Medicine (then called alternative /complementary medicine) through Andy Weil M.D. She saw the benefits of less invasive, less toxic healthcare for patients and was impassioned to go to medical school to be able to bring these therapies to patients. After medical school, Dr. Phelps completed a three year Family Practice residency in Norristown, PA and then worked in Family Practice, always providing a more natural approach with prevention and botanicals. Her recent completion of the new Integrative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Arizona enables Dr. Phelps to provide even more scientifically grounded, alternative therapy choices to complement conventional care. She strives to listen intently to each patient’s unique history and then seeks to bring a balance in health, nutrition, and environment in order to achieve personal optimal wellness.
Dr. Phelps seeks to utilize effective non-pharmacologic treatments for many common medical conditions. This includes enhancing the patient’s innate ability to heal through nutrition, biofeedback, hypnotherapy and meditation; Dr Phelps is certified by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and has trained with Heartmath biofeedback. It is with these and other clinically proven adjuncts that a healthier lifestyle freer of medication can be obtained.
